LOST In Oahu

A favorite show of mine is LOST. I admit I don’t watch it each week because many a times I’m not home when it’s on and I don’t know how to work the recorder. Anyway, I like the show, I’m not a loyal viewer though and when you miss a week, well, you are pretty much LOST…this is the first of many bad puns.

lost2

LOST is filmed on the windward side of Oahu and the husband would always say, “They’re not lost, they’re in Oahu. Haven’t they found the H3 yet?” Fantasy can be hard for realists like him.

lost3

When we first moved to Hawaii, we lived on the windward side in the town of Kaneohe for almost six months. To me, it’s the most beautiful part of the island. One can get LOST in it’s beauty.

But they’re not lost, there’s a McDonalds just around that bend.

lost4

If I miss a show I would watch the next one carefully and try to figure out how many time travels I’ve missed and whether Hugo has really LOST his mind or whether he is the only one who sees the events for what they are – one messed up storyline.

Anyway, it’s 4:30 am here in Hawaii and everyone is asleep but me. I’m trying to type quietly. Apparently, I’m the only one in the family with jet lag. I gave up trying to acclimate to the time change since we are leaving in a couple of days anyway. It’s a LOST cause.

lost6

This was where we lived and we called it our beach shack because it literally was a shack, no insulation or conditioning or anything of the sort.

lost5

But we woke up every morning to this view, the Koolau mountains with the morning sun shining on them.

We drove by yesterday to see the house again. It was an excuse to get my fill of the windward side. My photos do not do it justice. It makes one LOST in the moment doesn’t it?

After flying all the way around the country, we finally end up in Portland, Oregon where we were supposed to catch a flight to our final destination. As it turns out, there was no room for all of us, so once again, we watch the airplane leave without us.

Since we are hopping, we knew it can happen at any destination, so we resigned ourselves to waiting in Portland for a day. It also gave us the opportunity to see some of this beautiful state. I have been to San Diego a few times (love love love loved it) but other than that, not much time at all west of the Mississippi as an adult. We were enthralled with Oregon, the kids wouldn’t stop saying “Wow!”

We spent the  morning hiking all the way up Multnomah Falls. What a work-out that was, this should be a fitness post. I was in a skirt and one day, I’ll have to give you packing tips because you will not believe the clothes I brought. They don’t wrinkle, they look great, they wear great and you can hike 1.5 miles straight uphill in a skirt then get on an airplane the same day.

Anyway, we then went to Bonneville Fish Farms that Neighbor Leigh told us to visit. Fish, fish, fish everywhere. Thanks for the tip Leigh, it was definitely worth the time.

This is officially one of  my all time favorite states.

We finally went to the airport again and this time, success. We got on…

And finally, ALOHA! We’re in Honolulu, Hawaii. I’m back at home, I’m never leaving again. Do you think Nanna will notice?

Bonneville Fish Farm, Portland, Oregon. It is the largest fresh water fish in North America. It can grow to 20 feet long and live over 100 years. This curious one is about 10 feet long and 70 years old.

Crop Circles Somewhere Over The US of A

I always try to sleep as much as I can on an airplane since I have what’s called a “sensitive stomach.” It doesn’t like the ups and downs of flight. In any case, while I’m sleeping, the girl snaps some great photos of crop circles somewhere over the USA. We don’t know what state we were flying over but we do know that we are west of 100 degrees longitude.

cropcircles1

The husband says that west of 100 degrees longitude in the continental US, farmers have to irrigate their crops because of insufficient rain.

cropcircles2

So they irrigate their crops using a center pivot irrigation system. Thus the crops are grown in circles, not squares like back east.

Very interesting…welcome to the education channel.

vacation1

You will not believe the events of the last 24 hours but this is how this crazy family lives life. We’re on vacation. We took Joker too, she’s a world traveler.
vacation3
We left the dog and the cat with Nanna. She is so kind! She came and started cooking right away. No big parties now Nanna. We don’t want the neighbors calling the cops while we are gone.
vacation2
We rip the kids out of vacation Bible School where they were serving all week and drove to the airport where we found out that we cannot get on the flight we had planned on. It went to St. Louis without us. They were disappointed to have missed Bible School finale…but vacation is a-calling. My kids worked so hard the past week. I’m so proud of them.
vacation6
Not to be deterred, we went to the pilot’s lounge where the husband had to get us a top secret escort to the bowels of the airport. We waited there until we caught a flight to somewhere, anywhere.

vacation7

They have a big screen tv, free internet, a pool table…boy, pilots have the life.
vacation4
Where are we now? Why Orlando, FL of course! The kids played Little Miss Muffet on the big chairs at the hotel, pondering where to go next.

vacation5

We had a wonderful breakfast and now are sitting in the airport, waiting to catch a flight to Las Vegas. We are literally hitch-hiking across the United States. It’s so cool. See you at the next stop…
