August 23, Psalm 4:1

funeral

I may be in the minority but I believe that sometimes, funerals can be a joyous occasion. Funerals are more for the people who are left behind, and if those left behind feel a sense of closure, then funerals are truly a celebration of a life well lived.

The funeral I had to attend last week however, was anything but joyous. It is painful when someone inexplicably takes their own life, a young man of 39 who leaves a wife and three children. Once of which is six weeks old.

He also leaves many questions and much heart-ache at the loss and circumstances surrounding his death.

So amongst the family celebrations that encompassed my week last week, there was this…an aching heart-ache.

There was one among my IT team who was most affected for they were friends and very emotionally attached. So I sent this passage to the team along with a request for prayer.

“Answer me when I call to you,
O my righteous God.
Give me relief from my distress;
be merciful to me and hear my prayer.”

Psalm 4:1

There are not many answers on this side of life. But there is acceptance in knowing that one day we will know…

    I agree that some funerals are joyous occasions even though there is sadness that the person has left this life, but others are completely joyless. How sad this one was. The message and scripture you sent to your team seems very appropriate.

  3. I, like you dont understand what took place. My young nephew did the same 3 years ago… and still almost daily I find my self wondering.

    Just yesterday though, I attended a celebration of a beautiful life.

    When my dad was dying on his death bed 2 yrs. ago, he remained joyful despite the circumstances around him. He told my bros. and I that he wanted to be different that when that time would come for him to go back Home, people around us would see that we were not sad. Instead, we were to remain joyful because we knew where his destination would be…By his grace, it was a beautiful time we had shared with him.

    After having spent 47 years preaching funerals I agree with your thoughts about them completely. A suicide is extremely difficult to deal with. Your words and thoughts are good. Thank you for posting.
