Here Figgy Figgy Figgy…

A couple of weeks ago, Neighbor Corinne (notice my neighborhood is expanding) gave me some fresh figs from her yard. I had never had fresh figs before, only dried and in desserts, etc, so I was very excited indeed. They were absolutely delicious…magni-fig. Le Francais would not not me butchering their language.
She also left me some fig chutney and I ate half the figs out of the chutney on my way home from work. So I decided…I’m going to get me some more.

Did you know?
1. Fresh figs are rich in vitamin B6 which helps in the production of hemoglobin and helps maintain your blood glucose level.
and
2. That Jesus ate figs…a fact that my pastor relayed to me as he helped himself to the stash that Corinne left me. Harumpf.
The fig tree can get pretty big but the ones in Neighbor Corinne’s yard were about 7 feet high, almost like bushes. The leaves were furry and I thought they were shaped like big maple leaves.
There’s your nutritional botanical history lesson for today.

I went to her home last weekend and completely raided her trees. Neighbor Corinne’s husband Neighbor Andy came out and to see what we were doing and I asked him if he had a lot of figs lately. He said, “No, they’re disgusting.”
And all this time I thought he was perfect.

I had it in my head that I was going to make fig pie. Though I’m not sure if there was even such a thing as fig pie. No matter, I threw myself into the task…I’m not sure if I needed my mortar and pestle, fish sauce or tomatoes from my garden but I had them there anyway.

I cut the stems off the top and cut the figs in half. Then I threw in some sugar and some flour. Literally threw it in, I have no idea how much. I bought some pre-made pie crust because that’s just how I am and I put the fig mixture in it.

I used this pie plate, a ready? Polish pottery piece that my mom gave me one Christmas. It’s a perfect figgy pie plate.

Isn’t it beautiful?
I’d like to say that it tasted as good as the pie plate that it’s in…but it can be better. How?
Next time, I’m leaving out the sugar. The figs were plenty sweet on their own. I’m throwing in a pinch of salt and cinnamon and most importantly, I’m going to chop the figs up a lot smaller. So pie number two is coming up for bunco this Friday.
As soon as I get over to Neighbor Corinne’s to pick some more. Can I please?
More Mosaics at Mary’s Place and more food at Foodie Friday when Friday rolls around.

Oh I ADORE fresh figs! Sadly, we don’t get too many here in NJ.
Have you ever had them wrapped with prosciutto? Heavenly! Thanks so much for sharing your beautiful images at Mosaic Monday.
Oh yum yum! That looks so good. Great job!!!
love figs, you are so lucky to have such a nice neighbor! Love your mosaic, and the pie looks fantastic!
Wow, I learned a lot here. Love your sense of adventure…I’ve never heard of a fig pie. I’ve never even tried them…perhaps I shall now….you’ve stirred my curiosity. Wonderful post!
I’ve never had a fresh fig. That’s not what I would have expected them to look like inside. Interesting!
I’ve never had a fresh fig! Do you have any left over that I could taste?
Your pie is gorgeous and so are your mosaics.
Be a sweetie,

Hello, great shots. I have fig tree in my yard, but never use the figs. I did not know that they were source of B6. Excellent, might have to use them, B6 is excellent. Great pie you made there, looks and am sure the next will taste even better. Thank you for sharing
ENjoy your day.
Gorgeous pie plate! Your photos are bright and colorful! I have not tasted fresh figs, but I’ve eaten the dried ones. Lovely mosaic!
I have never eaten fresh figs. Today was educational for me!!
Loved this post…and I’m going out to photograph my fig tree and pick some figs, I usually let let the birds eat most of them, I think I’ll make some fig jam!!!
Clever caption to start off your lovely mosaic. Beautiful pie plate from your Mom. I would also probably leave out the sugar or cut back on it the next time as figs are so naturally sweet to begin with. Don’t worry I still could eat your entire pie:)

Beautiful post. Love the pictures.
After a few years of bountiful crops we’ve found leaving the sugar out works in most fig recipes. Borrowed my sister’s dehydrator to try and hold onto the figs longer and it worked nicely. I’m looking forward to using them in holiday recipes. The chutney is by far my favorite (Emeril’s recipe) too! Thanks for helping us eat them (especially since I have no help from the hubby).
I love, love, love figs. We just always ate them fresh, but baked with the dried ones. I’m going to have to try this recipe if I ever see a good deal on fresh figs in the store. I should probably plant a fig tree… as much as I love them.

I don’t think I have ever had a fresh fig before either! They are beautiful!
I have to find me a neighbor with a fig tree… or plant one for myself.
Have a wonderful week end!
