A Love Story

Last weekend, during the biggest blizzard of the century, the husband called me to tell me that he was not able to make it home. The airport was closed, all flights were canceled and everyone, whether they liked it or not, was staying right where they were.

He sounded upset, disappointed, and slightly out of sorts. He went on to say that he was going to fly into the closest airport, then rent a car and drive home. I couldn’t understand the urgency and I told him he was not doing anything of the sort. I tried to assure him that the kids and I were fine. We had electricity, cable, the internet and no place we had to be. We were actually kind of excited about the storm.

But then, he told me this.

That he had a planned a get away for us. That we were to fly to Boston on Monday and stay until Wednesday. That while we were there, we were going to have dinner with the fabulous Marcie Scudder and her husband. Really? The photographer that I’ve admired since I started my photography obsession? That Marcie Scudder? The person with whom I have a collaboration with at Vision and Verb but yet have never met. That Marcie Scudder?

We were then going to dinner at a restaurant owned by Ming Tsai, a celebrity chef that I’ve admired for a long time.

That he had coordinated this time off with my boss, the gym where I teach, and my mother was coming down to stay with the kids while we were gone. It was an elaborate scheme, everyone who was a part of it confided to me afterward that they were bursting to tell me.

And now we can’t go because he can’t get home.

heart4

He was very very disapointed and he apologized profusely.

Me? I couldn’t have been any happier if we had actually gone. With the exception of when he asked me to marry him, he has never been able to surprise me. We will get to do all those fantastic things one day. But it doesn’t have to be today. Today, I’m loving my hubby, the most romantic man in the world.

Happy Valentine’s Day.

What a sweet story!!! And – yes – your hubby is amazing to have planned and coordinated this without you ever knowing. We were all looking forward to it..and still hoping that he’ll be able to pull off another ’surprise’ like this in the spring (but maybe then it won’t be such a surprise???). Here’s to better weather and plans to meet again!!!!

Truly a love story. Maybe that trip wasn’t meant to be, but it doesn’t really matter. There will be more. Good going big daddy!
