A Health Class Public Service

I went to Parents’ Open House at the high school last week. I wasn’t paying much attention to the health teacher, I was texting Miss Shannon about making beef salad. I then heard the words STD and “how it’s spread.”

I popped my head up quickly and cleaned out my ears.

This is what our children are learning in health class in the public schools in 9th grade. I’m not making a commentary, just stating the facts. So when you go to your child’s open house, listen to what the health teacher is saying and decide for yourself. At least you’ll be aware of what they are learning in school and hopefully open a dialogue about it as parents.

If you can get your teenager to talk to you that is.

This is a public service announcement.

I am 36 and when I was in 8th grade (20+ years ago), we had to watch a video on STDs in health class. I passed out. They showed the ge*nital region with infections for each type of STD. Talk about scaring kids straight!!! I wonder if this would be considered un-PC now.

I think it’s a GREAT idea! In my 9th grade health class, the teacher taught pulling out as a valid birth control option. I stood up and argued with him for 20 minutes. Hmmm…wonder why there were so many pregnant girls at my high school. So sad. (Sorry! /rant.)

  3. i learned about that in health too. sex ed was part of health and we all looked forward to that part!
