January 24, iHeartfaces Texture Challenge

I took a series of self-portraits hoping to use one for my bio on Vision and Verb. I didn’t use any of them but I thought I’d put this one in for my entry for the texture contest this week at iHeartfaces. Download the texture I used courtesy of Les Brumes. And the white specks on the photo? That’s toothpaste on my bathroom mirror. It’s built in texture.

I ran Get Totally Rad’s Milk and Cookies black and white action. I just want to give him some cookies.

Next week’s challenge is “Sun Flare.” Since it’s been raining since 1992, I don’t know if I’ll find any. Perhaps Sunday when the weather man says it will clear up…

What’s Your Play? no. 70

Yeah! Another fall foliage shot to work with! There’s not enough of those at LifeSignatures!

This is the before photo by Laura at Dolcepics.

And here is my play.

Shortcuts are on a PC and photo editing application is Photoshop CS2.

What I did:

1) Made two duplicate layers. (Ctrl J two times)
2) Made changed one layer to Soft Light.
3) Made other layer to Screen, 75% (I think).
4) Merged layers.
5) Created fill/adjustment layer (click the little moon at the bottom of the layers palette).
6) Set layer to Hue/Saturation.
7) Set Hue = 0, Saturation = +5, Lightness = 0.
I now used a texture that Michelle of My Two Seasons linked to on iHeartfaces…
9) Place the texture on top of the image.
10) Set layer to Overlay (play with the opacity, I forgot my setting.)
11) Duplicate texture layer. (I’m going to place the texture on again.)
12) Set texture layer to Multiply. (Again, play with the opacity.)
13) It was grainy so I ran TRA’s Smoothomatic action.

Voila, I hope the steps were helpful at least in learning how to play with different adjustment layers. To me, they are the fastest way to edit photos besides using actions. Many times I’ll just “play” and won’t remember the steps. This is no exception so I urge you to try it for yourself. It’s fun!

What’s Your Play no. 65

Laura at dolcepics.com has a very cute What’s Your Play this week. This has a lot of color so I decided to go with it and restrain myself. I added a little bit of a gaussian blur, lightened it, then added a little contrast layer and I get this…

I’m subtle today, what a change.

Fix-It Friday, Little Nancy Drew

It’s Friday so it’s time for iHeartfaces Fix-It Friday. This photo was sent in by the Animator’s Wife who I don’t know but like very much. There’s beautiful photography going on at her place. Her daughter reminds me of Nancy Drew, a cute little strawberry blonde. Some may say she’s a red-head but oh well, we can all agree she’s cute!

I’m not 100% happy with the end result because of the rainbow that is across her hair. I tried and tried to edit it out but nothing worked, not the healing tool, not the cloning tool, not adding or subtracting layers, not even prayer. It’s there…so be it. If I played any more with it, I’d be in danger of sitting in this spot all day. Someone has to know how to do it, anyone?

Come to think of it, I like the original better. Oh well.

What’s Your Play no. 63

Most of you know that the girl is a crazy about horses. A horse freak so to speak…

So I saw this photo by Laura at dolcepics for a play this week and I had to play along. Or I wouldn’t be a good mom.

So I made a little yellow cast, made a little glow, made a little graining. Or you can just run TRA’s Sparta…like I did:)

What’s Your Play no. 62

I wanted to play along with Laura of Dolcepics this week since I missed a couple. I would put down my steps but I don’t have time right now! I may come back and do it later…

And here’s the after. The first step was obviously a crop. And the last step was a texture. I wanted to make it look like an old photo.
