January 24, Speaking In Different Tongues

I feel comfortable in situations where I don’t understand the language and I’m sure it’s because I spent most of my childhood in countries where many different languages were spoken. I didn’t always understand the words, but I always tried to make sense of the context, through hand gestures and smiles.
So I love signs like this – a little bit of this and a little bit of that and even if we don’t understand the language we understand the meaning. And this meansĀ – food! Now you’re talkin’.
January 23, Horses In Winter

It’s Instagram Monday! It’s deemed so today because I haven’t yet downloaded any photos from this weekend and Instagram makes it so easy! This smart phone app has its detractors, but it’s a lot of fun and easy – and free.
There was a lot going on this weekend…so much competition. Newt Gingrich wins the South Carolina primary, Giants win the NFC, Patriots win the AFC, our very won Oakcrest team loses to another farm in the horsey meet. There were some tears all around some of joy, some not.
These horses were out in the cold this weekend – along with all the girls and their support. I spent a lot of time in the car with the engine running but I saw these horses in the field and decided to brave the cold. I hope horses fare better in the cold than people do…
January 20, Reflections

It wasn’t until I was in my 30’s that I started really looking at myself in the mirror. I was a very self-conscious teenager and I was never one to primp in front of the mirror for hours. It would take me about 15 minutes to get ready for school and styling my hair meant combing it before I left for the bus stop with soaking wet hair, even in the winter.
I always felt the ugly duckling.
I credit time, age and my husband for making me feel more comfortable in my own skin. And now in my 40’s I’m starting to feel fabulous! Yes, I wish I had my 20 year old body, but who doesn’t? Here’s to looking in the mirror – and really seeing your the true reflection of yourself.

Yesterday I posted some photos of the Bar Brothers.
They are so much fun I thought I’d post some more photos today.
I looked at these photos and I think – I can do that.
Well, maybe not that.…
P90X is getting here on Friday! I’m getting mentally ready for my new hard body…
Yup.

Just like so many Federal holidays, Martin Luther King Day came and went without barely a wink and a nod.
However, there are some out there who acknowledged that day by quoting him. I believe except for Abraham Lincoln, he is one of the most eruditeĀ individuals in history.
I kept seeing wonderful quotes by him and I thought I’d start collecting.
Some of my favorites -
“I have decided to stick with love, hate is too great a burden to bear.”
“If today’s Church doesn’t recapture the sacrificial spirit of the early Church… it’ll be dismissed as an irrelevant social club.”
“A man who won’t die for something is not fit to live.”
“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”
Have a wonderful Wednesday . . .
Bar Brothers & P90X

Chinatown in Washinton DC encompasses just a few blocks and compared to Chinatown in say – Honolulu – it is relatively small. We walked it in just a couple of hours and it would have taken a much shorter time had we not stopped and watched his young man hanging on some scaffolding. He stayed in this position for about 30 seconds.
Then he did this – abs and arms of steel…
Last week, I was looking for new inspiration for my work-out and on a whim, I purchased the P90X workout. I’m not working out until it arrives. No need to over-tax myself ahead of time.
This is a group of guys called Bar Brothers of DC. They apparently get together to climb on scaffolding.
It’s as good a reason as any to get together. Look at them…pretty cool.
This is their signature move – called the “muscle up.”
As we watched they had a contest to see who can do the most muscle ups.
They went down…
And up…
And down…my arms are starting to hurt…
And up…you get the point.
They did this until they dropped out one by one.
The muscle man was the winner and the last man standing – or hanging.
It was pretty incredible.
There’s a universal behavior among young males everywhere. They love to rough house and wrestle. I find it very endearing as long as no one breaks any dishes.
They have a website! http://www.barbrothersdc.com/. Check it out. There’s a tutorial on how to do a muscle up. I’ll meet you next week on H Street and we’ll do a couple ok?

Our Christmas decorations went back into their packing bins yesterday. Yes, I know, it’s about time. These little men are treasured ornaments from Germany, purchased long ago and cherished many years since. I can’t imagine a Christmas without seeing their funny faces and quirky accessories.
Good-bye Christmas memories – until next year.

A poor leaf reminiscent of an empty pea pod. The shell without its fruit. Don’t worry, in the summer, you will regain your glory.

It snowed last Monday and I was so excited that I took the dog for a walk between the flakes. She was excited too, something about the first snowfall of the year. It was beautiful. The flakes were huge, I can almost feel the weight of them on my shoulders.
The snow is gone today. I hope it won’t be our last for the year!
